The objective of this work package is to design, validate and demonstrate a pool of modular robots that are able to bring the Peacetolero sensor to a required position (e.g. interior surface of a pipe), which is potentially located in a radioactive area. The work-package includes the design of a supervisory telerobotic system to enable the expert user to perform the inspection of the pipe in a safe manner, at a distance. The system includes the multimodal user-interface, communications, localisation, embedded software, and robot design. The technology used to build the hardware of the robot has an objective to minimize its cost, while increasing the modularity and the simplicity of the system, especially when a reconfiguration of the robot is required in order to perform a specific mission.

In fact, during this first year tasks 7.1 (Simulation Server) and 7.2 (Multimodal Human-Robot Interface) have been fulfilled, which enabled the implementation of a prototype of the multimodal human-robot interface, interacting with a realistic simulation server of the robotic scenarios. Besides this, from months 13 to 18, an upgrade of the Minicernbot robotic mobile platform has been performed, in order to perform experiments related to localization and communications in radioactive and underwater environments, specially when using 3D perception and omnidirectional movements. Further steps will face the construction of the three robotic prototypes and the integration of the Peacetolero sensor.

The post Update: El-Peacetolero on a robot first appeared on El-Peacetolero.

Progress update: Compact measurement LED-based head

We have developed two concepts of miniature sensors based on LED-photodiode mid-IR optopair together with specific measuring algorithm that were used for determination of liquid composition by monolithic on-chip prototypes operating at 3.6 and 3.4 um wavelengths (see Fig.). Noise measurements in an immersion lens LED-photodiode pair (3.4 um) showed low LED output noise, the noise was less than that in the Black Body- photodiode pair. Reports on optical schematics and recommendations (D5.1 and D5.2) as well as the manufacturing and delivery of two samples of sensors (MS5) have been accomplished. Several aspects of the research results have been disclosed in two patents active in RF and in three scientific papers (DOI: 10.1002/pssa.202100456, 10.1134/S0030400X21090101, 10.1016/j.infrared.2021.103867).

Heterostructure LEDs and photodiodes produced by IoffeLED Ltd. were characterised and compared with other devices available in the market. Using specifications and measured parameters the LED drivers and the photodiode amplifiers have been developed and tested as well as drivers and control electronics for Thermo-Electric Coolers (TEC).

The delivered monolithic sensors (MS5) do not meet all project requirements so far, e.g. they are not adapted for measurements of solids due to mechanical (reliability) issues. Thus the nearest WP5 goal is to develop miniature ATR sensor head tolerant to mechanical stresses and appropriate for measuring of solids. Another issue to be solved is a heating (heatsinking) in LED-PD based sensor due to a LED operation that makes ground for measurement errors and uncertainties. The problem has been already partly solved by implementation of the abovementioned algorithm, however further study is of necessity. Thus near future research include design upgrade, precise temperature distribution measurements at different heatsinking conditions and improving correction accuracy in monolithic sensor constructions.

The post Update: Compact measurement LED-based head first appeared on El-Peacetolero.

Fraunhofer IZFP research activities within the project are focused on the development of a multi-dimensional feature based artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm for the detection of degradation of aged industrial polymers (i.e. neoprene in a first step) by use of the IR measuring device that partners will develop. During the project period to date a uniform data format has been created which will enable the fusion of data from all methods applied in this project. To enable efficient data exchange and providing (preliminary) results among the project team a server solution was provided. In the next steps partners will provide data which will be used to create a representative dataset for the development of a suitable machine learning model. The acquired data will be extended by AI based augmentation and simulation techniques.

The post Update: data generation, artificial intelligence, real-time algorithms first appeared on El-Peacetolero.

The objective of this work package is to create a set of representative polymer aged samples and a database of their infrared spectroscopy measurements.

For the provision of materials, neoprene and HDPE samples have been chosen and ordered for accelerated ageing test. A deformulation of each kind of unaged material and IR characterization of the initial state have been performed in order to get more information about the nature and content of different additives in these materials.

For the accelerated ageing campaign, two kinds of ageing are considered, the thermo-oxidative ageing and the immersion ageing, both planned to be performed at 40 and 80°C. The thermo-oxidative ageing in two ovens have already been launched on March 2021. The immersion ageing is planned to be carried out in two test loops which have been built inside of EDF polymers and composites laboratory during the first year (2021) of the project. The two test loops use reconstituted raw water and salt water respectively for the immersion ageing of materials. The immersion ageing using reconstituted raw water have been launched on February 2022.

The accelerated ageing tests will generate aged samples at different ageing times. Infrared spectroscopy characterizations are performed on these aged samples every month to follow their ageing evolution and to build a database of IR measurements for neoprene and HDPE.

The post Update: Furniture, ageing and ATR-FTIR characterisation of industrial polymers first appeared on El-Peacetolero.
